Best Friends | Blog from Akshara

As a volunteer, my first encounter with the foundation students during the teacher orientation in August lit up my day. We were shown around the local school in Khubavali and the 6 kids that were going to run along the first year students at MUWCI came along. I ended up sitting on the floor in a circle with them, chai in one hand, pen and paper in the other, trying to copy their names in Hindi letters. They taught me how to say “we are best friends” right on the first day. It really meant so much to me. Right then, right there, I felt that I had arrived in India. Not just physically, but emotionally. These kids were excited about me being there, and were open and ready to connect. That is when I decided that I want to spend a part of my time here with them, getting involved in the foundation course. As a volunteer, I have the privilege to invest my time freely and deliberately. And yes! Friday will be our first class together…

As a prep class we met in the Social Center last week and played a couple of fun running games. I wanted to get to know them better, so then we sat down to draw mind-maps of ourselves and did little presentations. I showed them my home country, Austria, on the world map and pulled out a little picture brochure to talk about my life at home. Home! It seems not only miles away, but ages ago…

In the end we collected ideas and things we want to do together: watch movies in English, talk, walk, play, sing, dance, cook, and of course- learn stuff! Combining all these things with teaching, well, as I said, I am up for the challenge 🙂
