Get involved with an organisation that is dedicated to empowering individuals to achieve independence. Your support will have a direct impact on the lives of hundreds of people and will contribute to the sustainable transformation of rural livelihoods and lives in rural Maharashtra.
Volunteering and Gap Years
Our volunteers become important members of our team and have contributed to our programmes in meaningful ways. It is always exciting to be involved in a journey like Akshara where one can be a witness to changes which make a difference to participants. Volunteering with Akshara is a symbiotic relationship: where expertise of a volunteer contributes to the enrichment of the programme and the organisation provides a space to engage with the various facets of rural development. The minimum time commitment for volunteering is one month.
Gap Year Opportunities
Those seeking an extended opportunity to learn and make a difference can become a Gap Year volunteer. Long-term volunteers (more than 4 months) are usually given free housing and a food allowance on the UWC Mahindra College campus, which is an opportunity to experience life in a rural setting but also take part in a community of international youth leaders. While most of our long-term volunteers come from within the UWC movement, we welcome applications from people in January, with an intentional start date of August.
Those seeking a professional internship in a specialized area of interest can apply for longer-term internships in one of our programmes. The minimum time commitment for an internship is 3 months.
By participating in one of UWC Mahindra College’s short courses, you will have an amazing opportunity to volunteer as part of Akshara’s programmes, while being properly guided through trained teacher facilitators. Take a look here and change your life!
IB CAS Option
We welcome many IB schools with whom we create meaningful volunteer CAS opportunities for their students to volunteer and interact with local families and communities. UWC Mahindra College has been offering the IB curriculum for over 16 years and is a leader in developing innovative programmes within the IB network. We are proud to offer the strongest CAS programme in India, developing young people into critical thinkers who are responsible in how they give back to their communities.
Fundraise for Akshara’s activities in your own communities. Part fundraising activities have included bake sales, movie nights, Indian dinner suppers and sales of our products overseas. Please contact us for more information.
We welcome teachers or development professionals looking for a longer-term Sabbatical to experience living and learning within our organisation.
